Taverna del Subira
Subira is an incredibly special place for us, not least of all because it was our wedding venue. Located at the top of a 7.5km dirt track above Osor, Subira is the oldest and largest Masia in Catalunya. Various bits of the building date back nearly a thousand years and the current family who own the building can date their lineage at Subira back over 300 years.
Open Thursday to Sunday all day, Taverna del Subira is run by Joel, a friendly English-speaking Catalan. The food is second to none, and probably as classic Catalan as it comes. Hearty mountain rice, slow-cooked meats, grilled veg and fire-grilled steaks are just some of what's available. Everything is locally produced and seasonal. The Baldiri wine they have in-house is local and delicious. Make sure you leave room for cheesecake. This food is worth a special trip out. If you have only one day for out-of-Girona venturing, make this your lunch destination. The views alone are worth the trip.
The menu varies in price but you'll end up spending €15-30 per person and you won't be disappointed. Be sure to call and make reservations if you plan to eat +34 629 68 23 08.
To get there, be prepared for some off-roading, either by bike or car. There are three routes to the top (via Osor, via Sant Hilari Sacalm, and via Santa Coloma Farners), all of which are ride-able if you're happy with a bit of gravel. We've both ridden this on a road bike, but either gravel or mountain bikes are recommended. Our little VW Golf manages the technical Osor route pretty easily.
